As a CL55AMG owner, I'm not thrilled about this at all. I remember the shit we gave BMW with their M packages diluting their true M cars. Now Mercedes too?

Like 60% of MBs I see already have AMG wheels and emblems all over the interior. The good thing is that anyone who really cares/knows what they're talking about will recognize the genuine article when they see it.

I saw a guy in traffic recently with M badges on his 328i. It irritated the crap out of me. My GF didn't understand why I was pissed over it. When guys at her job started asking her about my CL55 and she saw how they reacted, I think she started to understand.

Granted, I didn't buy my car brand new. There's no way I could afford that. But, while shopping around, I did come across a CL500 with AMG badges on it. Took it for a quick joy ride and had fun. Had I bought that car, I would have taken the AMG badge off. It just isn't right.

This is directed at the people that take this shit so seriously

Posers? What even constitutes a poser?

Because I struggle to believe the wealthy business man that gets the S-Class AMG simply because he can, not because it means anything to him isnt the poser. Especially when compared to the guy in his mid-20's that has a passion but couldnt possibly afford the full on AMG, but because of that he is a poser? The C-Class AMG starts at something close to $70,000.

On top of that, AMG is a marketing tool with some substance. Mercedes is using that marketing tool. People bitch that its "diluting the brand", and so what? Seriously, who gives a shit? It doesnt make your car any slower, at most it might lower the prestige you get when you say "I drive an AMG". And again, who gives a shit? Unless you bought your AMG simply to brag to everyone around you about how much better you are because you have an AMG, otherwise it means literally nothing to you. You already have the real thing, a sport line doesnt change that.

There was a girl in my old apartment building that had a 328i with an M badge on It.

So one day, I decided to troll her. I told her "nice M3," she responded "what's that?" Instant facepalm.

Funny I read through this post the other day, are you also on MBworld? To me it's silly how upset some people are getting. If AMG is tuning the engine, suspension, exhaust and steering then it's AMG-Lite and that's perfectly okay.

Look at BMW they put a minimum of 90 M badges on the most basic cars that have little more than an M Sport front fascia. Which to me is still not a huge deal. A C450 that has more power + better suspension/exhaust then the C300/C400 but not as balls to the wall as the C63 is great as a DD.

Also on the AMG Sportline there is only an AMG badge on the side (similar to the S Line on Audis) and no AMG badge on the rear. Cars with "AMG Sport" look packages already come with AMG mats and wheels but no Affalterbach imprints and the like.

It really comes down to pretending to be something/someone that you're not. When someone imitates who you are or what you do, it takes away from the genuine article.

Yeah its for posers. So?

If you're a poser, might as well fucking own it. It's not like you can afford the real thing anyway, and getting the cheapest and most basic version with zero embellishment doesn't make you nobler, just poor. Better to be a poor person with delusions of grandeur than a poor person who doesn't even have that.

I haven't been over to MBWorld.org in a while. Decided to check in when the inevitable W215 suspension issues started to show their ugly faces. That's my #2 car site behind Jalop/Oppo.

Really can't argue when someone "owns their shit" weather it be good or bad. I know I can't afford a new AMG. I only have what I do now because these things depreciate like week old bread. But, I still take pride in what I have. Even with the suspension issues, my 12 y/o car is still a beast and I love it.

Except is having a cheaper AMG model really being a poseur? It's not like they are some badges stuck on. It's still got a higher output engine, a sportier suspension tune, a nice body kit, etc. Mercedes is just trying to expand their reach and build sportier cars without ruining what makes their regular models so great, the luxury aspect.

As the owner of an SL600 Sport AMG, I dont like this opinion, but I can understand where its coming from.

Once upon a time, having an AMG car was special, unique and most importantly a symbol of having the best of the best. Now AMG isnt enough. The Black series, Brabus and Renntech now fight for king of the hill. AMG is just the "base model" if you will of the performance machines. Simply not enough for those who crave even more. We understand that.

But the AMG models have somehow become the standard on every line that offers it. Why buy an S Class when you can buy an AMG version? For the posers, they can afford the AMG appearance package, but then try to equate the badge with superiority. Whether its just because they dont know any better or they "need" to be better, the name that was once associated with superiority is now just diluted into a marketing gimmick to get a few thousand more dollars.

Yes, AMG has very good, very impressive packages that you could get. If you bothered to ask. The new AMG GT is also an incredibly fast and good looking car for its class, but its sharing that name with cars simply riding along the trails of glory because of the name.

No different than BMW M cars, which is an unfortunate thing. Cars that should be recognized as being special get lost in the sauce because people forget the history behind the name, and people over-hype the cars with no actual impressive features to back the name.

That's just it. It's not the same hand built AMG motor as well as some other components. Think of it as Ford grabbing some parts off of eBay, slapping them on at the factory and calling a V6 Mustang a Roush Sport or a Shelby Sport. Personally, I'm not a big Ford fan. But, I can appreciate the GT500. It's more than just a trim level.

Mercedes can still build a sportier version of all of their cars. I honestly encourage it. But don't use the AMG name. It takes away from what a true AMG build is. I believe Mercedes has the ability to sell a set of sportier cars that can stand on their own and not rely on the history AMG bad brought to the brand.

My point exactly. The AMG name has been diluted because it's been allowed to become a common place "package" that just about any dealer can add for you. Brabus and Renntech exist because of the path forged by AMG in the beginning.

Mercedes builds great cars. And I believe they are capable of entering the market on their own merits and not riding the coat tails of their in house tuner. They can add the "Sport" moniker to their tuned and polished vehicles and still do very well. Like with Dinnan, there should be a certain criteria that an AMG model adheres to.

Raise the bar with performance, design and reliability. Not by creating a new sub-species to your in-house tuner.

Sure, it's smart business to use your in-house tuner to help develop better cars. Borrow some engineering and design specs. Make better, faster cars. But, they don't have to borrow the name too. Allow AMG to mean something special again. Don't dilute it for marketing's sake. The fact that AMG vehicles depreciate like crazy should be a warning.

I'm not terribly pleased with it either. Though I do understand the need for a trim level beneath proper AMG models. I take solace in the fact that AMG-sport models are much more than an appearance package, unlike M-sport and S-line. I also argued all of these same points with a couple of guys from Germany a while back, an engineer and a marketing guy. Did what I could to keep the AMG badge off.
